BIBLIOTHERAPY

Our Personal Librarian ServiceTM Bibliotherapy is delivered in one-on-one or group sessions, discussing culturally relevant, situation-specific books, media and information.  Research has shown that identifying with the characters and situations in a story can help people drastically improve their outlook, change perspectives and keep hope. In most cases, we suggest a maximum of six sessions with us, before we suggest seeking the help of other professionals. Bibliotherapy is billed on a per-hour, fee for service basis.  We have a reduced-fee sliding scale and donation subsidies to extend, as needed.

BIBLIOTHERAPY IS:
  • A planned program that may involve reading, listening or viewing.  The intention is to expose you to ways that other people have deal with very specific issues, challenges and life situations
  • Using a professional's knowledge and experience about how to gain insight (or another perspective) about a topic, from recommended resources
  • Our trained bibliotherapy facilitators can also help you gain maximum benefit from resources that you have self-selected to use during our sessions.
  • Uses information (often works of fiction or biography, articles, movies, lyrics, recordings or social media posts) and experiences of others
  • Discussing specific resources that have a very limited scope, for a short period of time
BIBLIOTHERAPY IS NOT:
  • For the treatment or diagnosis of disease
  • Open-ended discussions, about a broad range of topics, issues or concerns
  • Using cognitive or psycho-analytic therapy
  • Meant to replace the use of professional mental or medical services

ANSWERS to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question:
Will you be able to tell me what is wrong with me?

Answer:
No. We do not diagnose or treat any illness. However, our clients often find similarities between themselves and "people" in the resources we suggest, which leads them to seek the assistance of a mental health or medical provider.

Question:
I am currently seeing a therapist. Should I stop?

Answer:
Our service is a bridge to and in support of professional mental health services. We work with the mental health/medical providers that clients are currently seeing to select resources for use during their sessions. We also recommend clients to therapists and counselors, if they/we see a need.

Question:
How much does it cost? I do not have insurance and cannot afford the expense of help, right now.

Answer:
We are a non-profit organization, operating solely for the purpose of helping people. We make it very easy to afford our service.

The cost for bibliotherapy is $50 per session, and is often subsidized, thanks to the generous support of our donors and sponsors. We also offer an income-sensitive payment plan. We reduce fees by 80% for people on fixed incomes.
